How Much Water Should You Drink?

waterHint: It might not be 8 glasses a day.

We all know that water is essential to life, and an important part of a healthy diet. Not only does water help keep your skin healthy and glowing, but it has so many functions in the body, including transporting water to the cells, moving toxic waste out, and is necessary for healthy kidney function.

While water should always be your go-to drink choice, on busy days, it can be hard to fit in the 8 glasses of water that we’ve always been told we need each day. Eight glasses a day might be a great goal, but nutritionists and health experts say that it’s not the right amount for everybody.

Instead of sticking to that rigid rule, aim to consume half your body weight in ounces of water each day. For instance, if you weigh 120 pounds, then your goal should be 60 ounces of the clear stuff every day. Calculating your specific consumption goal will help make it easier for you to feel hydrated and cool throughout the day.

Though health experts argue that we get a lot of water from food, that’s not always the case. It is true if you’re eating large amounts of fresh produce each and every day, but it’s still not enough for you to forego sipping on water entirely.

If you find yourself drinking lots of coffee, tea, soda or juices, start with swapping just one of those drinks for water each day. It’s a small step, but it will help you reach your water goal, and you’ll be cutting out needless sugar and calories.

Another tip to getting more water is to carry around a big water bottle with you everywhere. You’ll have it right at hand whenever you need a drink, and you’ll be surprised at how quickly you reach your daily goal.
