Picking ApplesWhen I was a kid, my granny, a retired school teacher, used to sing this song “school days, school days, good ole golden rule days“, as she would urge me out of bed in the morning and to the breakfast table.

I think of the tune every August around this time, when the days are humid and hot and fall is just a few weeks away. Shopping for school clothes, books, binders, pencils, and the like is a common activity for parents this month. As we start into the fall, we’ll be spending more time inside and more time at the dinner table and in our own kitchens.
