Secrets of Women Who Never Seem To Age

How To Age GracefullyLast night, I was reading the article in New York Magazine about the rags to riches story of Sandra Lee.

“Wow, she’s beautiful, I thought she was older”, my husband said. “Well, she is getting older, but she’s still just as beautiful, not that much older than me,” I responded.

Then I started to think of my own friends who are 20 to 30 years older than me, and who look amazing – I have an interesting group of people in my social circle from all backgrounds and all age groups. I credit my Granny who taught me that cool people come in every shape and size, and age group, and I learn a lot from their years of life experience.

So What’s The Secret?

Aging GracefullySo what’s the secret for aging and keeping up in the beauty department? I know their secrets to looking fit, and keeping themselves that way, because I spend a lot of time with them. Some of these “secrets” are old wisdoms, but it’s always nice to be reminded!

Fall In Love With Antioxidants Foods

Hands down, these ladies are always eating foods that are high in anti-oxidants, and large portions of them, 4 to 5 cups daily: broccoli, avocado, blueberries, spinach, Brussels sprouts, you name it. And they have interesting, yet simple ways to prepare them:

  • Make a simple watercress salad with olive oil, salt, and your favorite balsamic vinegar.
  • Blend an avocado with spinach fresh lime and onion and jalapenos for a fast spicy dip.
  • Make a soothing sweet shake with mango, orange juice, and kiwi.

Take Care of Your Mug, Fill Your Mug

My friend in her 50’s always has a mug filled with hot lemon water on her desk as she works, and on warm days it’s a liter of bottled water. Did you know that you lose about 2 liters of water a day? Well, the average person isn’t replenishing that, drinking a measly 2 to 3 cups daily. If you want to keep that glowing complexion you’ve got to drink plenty of water, no way around it. Water goes to the vital organs first and to the skin last. As an acne sufferer, I always take a look at my skin in the morning. When it looks pitted, oily and dry, it almost always means I didn’t drink enough water the day before.

Two Crunches for Every Year Old!

One of my friends works out in her living room, she does over 100 crunches in one of her routines. My living room has doubled for years as a food photography set and yoga/pilates studio. It might feel weird at first, you may even have problems getting through your routine, but the more you do it the more comfortable you’ll feel working out anywhere – even a hotel room when you’re traveling. One of the biggest reasons that people don’t work out is the “I can’t get to the gym” and “no time” excuse. This is the answer to both.

Feel Young Forever, Stay Active

This is something I certainly have learned from watching the tango community at my favorite place to dance tango. Most of the dancers are well into their 60’s and 70’s, and they’ve got hotter physiques than many of the 20-year olds I see on the streets. Having fun by staying active is the best way to stay in shape and ward off stress, one of the biggest factors to “ungraceful aging”. Studies show that stress brings on the release of cortisol – meaning more fat storage and a host of other health issues.
