Kickstarting Natural Weight Loss

Natural Weight Loss

Eat right. Keep moving.

Most likely, you already know everything to prevent being overweight… but those two simple instructions might not be as easy to follow once you’re overweight, based on a survey of the majority of Americans who are already overweight or obese.

Once we are overweight, we typically want to slim down for many reasons, some obviously related to health, others related to how we look. Most health experts would agree that the significance of excess weight is more than cosmetic — it takes a huge toll on people’s physical and emotional health.

But no matter what motivates you to lose weight, one of the big principles in the Skinny Chef philosophy is that it’s never too late to lose weight, or kickstart a healthier lifestyle.

Obviously, it is a whole lot easier to prevent putting on the weight in the first place than to try losing pounds later on. And if there is one thing we all know, it is that weight gain is likely to happen if we do not take preemptive steps to stop it.

That’s why as a certified health coach, I tell my clients that when they want to lose weight, they have to think more about food, not less!

It’s a counterintuitive piece of advice, because many folks just want to avoid the topic of food, excess weight… until the snack attack hits.

Health experts also say that most people who are into losing weight usually stray at some point in their dieting scheme. They tend to go back to their old eating habits even after they learn to enjoy healthy eating. Or they tend to return to sedentary ways even though they enjoy exercising.

In my mind, it happens because the new, healthy eating regime is either too complicated, too artificial, or simply not tasty enough!

In some way, instant gratification is very important despite the fact that we all preach to take the longterm view, something that could be referred to as culinary medicine.

Fat-Free Is Not The Solution

Many consumers try to lose weight naturally by going for everything fat-free. It’s true, manufacturers keep coming out with low-fat or fat-free versions of their best-selling foods, but Americans keep getting fatter anyway. Why is that?

One of the greatest delusions of the 1990s is that “no fat” means “non-fattening” — when the truth is, you are often getting just as many calories from the no-fat version, even if the calories are not coming from fat.

The term fat-free can be a trap if you start to believe that you can eat any amount of the foods that are advertised that way.

It is best to respond to hunger with healthful snacks. Health experts say it would be better to try eating every three to four hours, which may mean a nutritious low-fat snack between lunch and dinner.

When you feel the urge for food coming on, snacking on something healthy such as a slice of whole-grain toasted bread is a better alternative. Never skip a meal and eat snacks instead because that is the worst thing you can do if you are trying to control your eating habits and weight.
