Get Over Your Fear of Cooking!

getting over your fear of cookingSo many people say to me “I can’t cook!” When I look at them incredulously, they confess “Ok… I am scared to cook!

Yet there is so need to be fretful about food preparation! With the economy still lagging, there is no better time to improve your culinary prowess. You can save on your monthly food budget and do double duty by feeding your loved ones a healthy, home-cooked meal!

Here are 5 tips to help you get started in the kitchen.

  • 1. Use a recipe! To be perfectly blunt – if you can read, then you can cook. Read through the recipe at least once before beginning, then be sure to have all the ingredients prepped before you heat the skillet or turn on the oven.
  • 2. Choose an easy recipe. Recipes don’t have to be elaborate. Haven’t spent much time in the kitchen, but want to start cooking? Remember that Rome wasn’t built in a day, but home-made pizza can be. Don’t put so much pressure on yourself. You won’t go from making boxed mac n’ cheese to duck a la orange overnight! Take it in baby steps and choose easy recipes to start. A home-made meal doesn’t have to be elaborate to taste good.
  • 3. Start with soups. Soups are not only simple to prepare, but they are healthy, can be made in advance, can be made on the cheap and can often be one-dish meals! So you’re not only making a delicious meal for you and your loved ones, but you’re saving time and money too!
  • 4. Dust off those wedding presents. Haven’t used that crock pot you registered for? Has your food processor never seen the light of day? Well, now is the time to brush off the cobwebs and put those machines to work! I know there are so many kitchen tools out there that it’s overwhelming, but there are some old stand-bys that truly do make your time in the kitchen more efficient and will make the task of cooking a little less daunting for you! Ranges from the big – crockpot & food processor – to the small – microplane and peeler.
  • 5. Salt. Knowing how to use this one little ingredient can promote a ho-hum cook to a wowee cook! So many home cooks are scared of this sacred saline seasoning, but shouldn’t be. Salt draws out the natural flavors of food making it a natural cook’s helper, so learn how to use it.
