Guide to Smashing Smoothies

cherry coffee smoothieI‘m such a fan of homemade smoothies because it’s an easy healthy breakfast that’s ready in five minutes flat.

Smoothies are delicious and I’ve never met anyone who doesn’t like the creamy “milkshake-like” texture of my protein-rich, fruit-to-nuts smoothies.

The ingredients store well and you can “shake” up the flavor anytime by using vegetables, seeds, and flavored extracts to get some surprising combos. It’s also a great way to empty the fruit basket sitting on your counter top, use leftover cold coffee, and even satisfy your craving for a dessert.

Smoothie Base

1 cup reduced fat Greek yogurt, or plain kefir
1 tablespoon ground golden flax
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
2 ice cubes

Equipment

Don’t you hate it when ice doesn’t crush up in your run of the mill blender? Here are my picks to make your kitchen smoothie ready:

  • The “Smoothie King”, The Magic Bullet – This little mean smoothie machine takes up very little counter space and has a blade strong enough to chop ice. Blend directly in the plastic drinking cups, then pop the cup in the dishwasher for easy clean up. Check out the Magic Bullet Express 17-Piece High-Speed Blender Mixing System on Amazon…
  • Slim Shady – Otherwise known as a “stick” or immersion blender, this baby chops nuts and ice from chunky to smooth depending on the speed. Its stainless steel blade is tough enough for ice, but also blend a might nice, velvety soup. Check out the KitchenAid KHB300 Hand Blender
