Chocolate Avocado Milkshake

chocolate-avocado-shake-300x450Avocado in a milkshake might sound unusual, but in Vietnam it’s a traditional treat that you can order in local restaurants, minus the coco powder! Enjoy a creamy, rich shake while getting a serving of fiber rich avocado boot.

  1. I JUST MADE THIS AND IT WAS SO DELICIOUS THAT I HAD TO COME STRAIGHT TO MY COMPUTER AND tell everyone( sorry my cap locks button was down)haha!! anyway this shake is so rich and creamy. i added a half of organic banana to it. yum!!! you cant even tell a veggie is in this. i think it tastes way better than any fast food chocolate drink by far!! thanks for the awesome recipe.

  2. DELICIOUS! And I had my doubts! I had my dad try it (but didn’t tell him what’s in it) and when I told him there was a whole avacado in it he was very surprised.

I doubled the recipe and cut the milk down in half so it was creamier. I also added 2 tablespoons of peanut butter..YUMMM!!!!

You can also add ice cubes to the blender and some coffee instead of milk, and have a healthy frapaccino!!!! LOVE IT!!!!

  3. I agree. This is great and you cannot taste the avocado at all, which was interesting. I used almond milk instead of milk and only 1 T of sugar and thought it was delicious.

  4. Actually, the avocado is a FRUIT, not a veggie, which just makes it even more appealing! mmm.

Another good thing to try: do the avocado shake, but instead of the cocoa, squeeze a whole lime in it (Cuban Avocaso milshake). Everything else is the same, and it is DELICIOUS.

  5. I use agave nectar instead of sugar, and it is fabulous!!

You can add anything with flavor to the basic shake (minus the cocoa). Mango is good!!

  6. OH!!! And you have to try using th ejuice of one lime instead of the cocal for a Cuban shake. Delish!!

  7. Sounds good. I’ll have to try tonight.

  8. This rocks my world. I just got a magic bullet blender and this was the first thing I’ve tried. I will never drink ice-cream based milkshakes again.

    • What a cool idea! One of my favorite ways to have avcaodo is with shrimp cocktail. The creamy avcaodo flavor is delicious with the shrimp and the cocktail sauce. I love the idea of using it as a sauce on pasta. So clever. If you’d like, I wanted to invite you to share your best recipes over at my new party, Recipe Sharing Monday at . I’m going to be featuring my favorite submissions during the week and I’d love it if you’d join in the fun. :O)

  9. Delicious, but can’t really taste the avocado at all. I’ll probably cut the chocolate way down next time, but if you’re not a huge avocado fan, stick to the recipe.

  10. Hey
this sounds great i will try it with turbinado sugar(raw sugar)

I tried this yesterday and it was yummy. I will cut down the vanilla extract next time, but that is because I am not that fond of the extract flavor. I will absolutely make this again and try to serve it to my young nieces.

  12. Kelli-Ann says

Ok – this recipe has been kid tested and approved 🙂 My nieces said it was the best milkshake they ever had (my 8yr old niece even wrote me a thank-you note). My 12yr old niece knew something was up – she kept asking if it had fruit in it. I feel guilty for not telling them it had avocado in it, but they revolt against everything, so I will give it some more time before I spill my secret. I did omit the vanilla and only used 1/2 the brown sugar – still fantastic!

  13. Awesome. My fiancé hates avocados and soy milk… mixed it with white sugar (the brown one was rock hard) and a drip of vanilla extract only. He absolutely loved it and slurped it to the last drop.

  14. You can also add flax seed for the extra nutrients! Great play with texture 🙂

    • Great idea! Just as a note, the flax seed has to be ground to make it bio-available so you can get the nutrients. Also when you add liquid to flax it can work as a thickener so if you add it to this shake you might want to top it off with more milk.

  15. Very tasty. I apparently need a better blender as there are chunks of avocado floating around in mine! I will definitely try the less milk and ice cubes idea to thicken it up. Great after-workout boost. Wonder what fat-free yogurt would do…

    • Hey Ruth,

If you’re getting chunks of avocado, your avocado probably isn’t ripe enough. You can rest your avocados on the counter top for two days and press gently. When they “give” to the touch they are ripe and ready to go.

  16. Do you use sweetened or unsweetened cocoa powder? Thanks!

  17. This shake is AMAZING! I added a little bit of splenda in mine, andused the brown sugar made with splenda it was awesome! Thanks for the recipe!

  18. ALL I CAN SAY IS WOW! Had this shake with a Tablespoon of natural whey protein powder for staying power in my morning shake and raw sugar and it was phenomenal. Next time I’m going to just try half a tablespoon of sugar and almond milk to make it even healthier. BRAVO! I never comment but I had to. This tasted like an indulgent milkshake from Johnny Rockets!!!!!!!

    • What a lovely comment, thanks so much for writing in! You’ve made my day 🙂 The shake is only 169 calories minus the whey protein, it’s also high in fiber.

I’ve made it with the almond milk before and it becomes much thicker so you might want to add a little water to thin it out.

  19. I am a college student who literally NEVER cooks so this may be a dumb question…Can I use honey instead of brown sugar for sweetener?

  20. I was actually CRAVING avocado and dark chocolate at the same time so googled the two together and found this recipe! I’m SO trying it! 🙂

  21. I just finished viewing a recipe on strawberry and avo smoothy. As soon as I think I have seen it all and there comes a Chocolate Avocado Recipe Milkshake. What next is beyond me! The avocado pear can be used for many purposes and for many ingredients. At homes, in restaurants and parties. The fruit is very versatile and not to mention that it has many health benefits that build the body up llike Vitamins B, C, E, K, Folic acid, Niacin, Potassium and Chemincal properties that help with weight loss, hear diseases and cholesterol.

    LOVE THE POST THOUGH!

  22. I wish this was as good as everyone above said it is. I have gestational diabetes and have been desperate for a chocolate milk shake for 10 weeks…..however this didn’t meet my needs or desires. I love avacodo and am not opposed to healthy but I’d label this as “okay” at best.

  23. I just went paleo and have been wanting a milkshake badly! I subbed the milk for coconut milk and the brown sugar for honey but it was delicious! I had a small avocado so I used the whole thing. Prob could have still done half as the flavor does come through quite a bit but thanks for making one that didn’t include banana!

  24. Just tried it. Wonderful choco drink. However it is impossible to taste the avocado. Also a little too sweet. With more milk it would not be any better but the enjoyment would last longer. Do not forget to add enough ice so it chills well. It also deserves better than Hershey’s coco.

  25. utterly delicious, can’t taste anything but chocolate add so goji berries for a health kick. But on thing you can cut down to a 1 cup of milk for a less watery texture
